The definitive guide to Atlanta's al pastor, taqueria by taqueria.

Atlanta's Mexican food scene doesn't get enough credit. So we decided to do something about it — starting with al pastor, the dish that might have more passionate defenders than any taco in this city.

We asked the Carne Asada community to nominate their favorites. You delivered. Then we went and tried them all — from Brookhaven to Douglasville, from taqueria institutions to counters in the back of grocery stores — to find Atlanta's best.

Here's what we found.

Tacos Al Pastor

Tacos Al Pastor

Brookhaven

📍 Get Directions

A family-owned food truck turned permanent fixture in a gas station parking lot — exactly the kind of place you hope to find good tacos. They run an electric trompo, make their tortillas by hand, and don't skimp on portions. The pastor has good color from the achiote and comes with the classic onion-cilantro-lime treatment. Solid neighborhood spot that delivers on the fundamentals.

Mexico City street food vibes in the old Takorea space. They carve the pastor right off the trompo to order, and you can see the whole operation from the counter. Good heat in the marinade, proper char on the edges, and a menu that goes deeper than just tacos. The mezcal cocktails don't hurt either. Worth the drive.

Chicago Supermercado

Buford Highway, Doraville

The kind of place regulars don't want you to know about. Walk through a full Mexican grocery store and find the taco counter hidden in the back. Handmade tortillas, self-serve salsa bar, zero frills. The al pastor is legit — simple, no-nonsense, exactly what you'd find on a corner in Mexico City. Bring Spanish or patience.

Casa del Taco

Marietta

📍 Get Directions

Husband-and-wife operation where the owner was a taquero in Mexico City before bringing his craft to Marietta. The al pastor is deeply seasoned with real achiote, cooked on a proper trompo, served with nopales and grilled onions on the side. This is the kind of place where someone who knows what they're doing is actually doing it. Legit.

The name translates to 'The King of Pastor' and they're trying to earn it. They use a fattier cut of pork than most places, which means the shaved meat comes off juicy and rich rather than lean and dry. Real trompo, good char, different vibe than the classic CDMX style but delicious in its own right. Worth the haul to Douglasville.

Hidden gem inside a gas station that smells incredible before you even walk in. They've built a following for good reason — the food is fresh, made in front of you, and consistently solid. The al pastor and carne asada both deliver. Multiple locations now across Gwinnett, so there's probably one near you. Come early, they get busy fast.

Beto's Tacos

Midtown / Buckhead / Johns Creek

📍 Get Directions

OG Atlanta taco spot that's grown into multiple locations without losing its soul. Owner Roberto 'Beto' Correa still travels back to Mexico regularly to stay sharp on technique. No freezer, no microwave — everything made fresh daily. The al pastor is classic: marinated pork, pineapple, cilantro, onion. Clean execution, consistent quality across locations.

📍 Get Directions

Atlanta's homegrown taqueria chain that actually cares. They run a real trompo for their al pastor — seasoned pork slowly cooked on a spinning spit, carved to order with roasted pineapple. They press tortillas in-house from fresh masa. Good balance of accessibility and authenticity. Multiple locations from Midtown to Cumming, open late.

Vice Taco Truck

Atlanta Dairies / 97 Estoria

📍 Get Directions

Pastel-colored taco truck that's built a cult following at Atlanta Dairies and Estoria. Everything comes on blue corn tortillas with a creamy avocado sauce. The menu is tight: tacos, mulitas, costras, volcanes. Simple ingredients, big flavors. The carne asada gets the most love, but the al pastor holds its own. Show up early — they sell out.

Started as a food truck, now a brick-and-mortar near the airport that Delta employees have turned into a regular lunch spot. The birria gets the buzz, but the al pastor quesadilla is a sleeper hit. Authentic street-style tacos with cilantro and onion, solid salsas on the side. Quick service, clean space, friendly crew. Good value.
